Viltrox 50mm f1.8 vs Sony 50mm f1.8 Can the Viltrox 50mm f1.8 beat the super cheap Sony 50mm f1.8 FE lens? I take this through a quick photoshoot scenario and video shoot just to test them side by side and see which one is better "out in the field". The Sony lens performs how a sony lens should. Fast autofocus and reliable with overall pretty decent image performance. The viltrox on the other hand has a few quirks. Image performance is solid but with the photoshoot it had a few autofocus issues. It would not catch onto the model or focus properly a few times during the shoot which became frustrating. I must say if you are a photographer I recommend the Sony lens and if you are a video shooter than the Viltrox lens may be better for you. Fifty-millimeter lenses have been around for decades, ranging from poorly made pieces of plastic bits mashed together to Leica’s completely solid metal and glass $10,650 f/ Noctilux car loan. For the majority of us, though, we can only afford those that are on the cheaper side of the scale. Sony E-Mount users haven't even been able to choose from very many without crossing borders into Canon, Nikon, and Rokinon (just to name a few). The only E-Mount Full Frame option is the Zeiss 55mm for around $600-$700 used. Now, though, Sony have finally released their own Nifty Fifty and it's at a reasonable-ish $250. One problem with newly released lenses (for Sony at least) is the fact that you have to update your camera’s firmware in order to make it compatible. In this video, I will show you how this new 50mm from Sony works before updating the firmware as well as after. I used to dislike this lens because it did not work with autofocus continuous with my previous sony cameras. But combined with the sony a7III 693 phase detect AF system and the latest firmware update for the lens (version 03), this lens is completely usable with continuous autofocus in video mode. If you own this lens I highly suggest you to update the firmware to version 03. And if you are in the market for a cheap 50mm native sony lens that works with continuous autofocus lens this is the best option. (keep in mind, it is not G-master quality, but it gets the job done). Quick story I forgot to mention this in the video: A couple of months back this lens used was at a very affordable price, but lately during this pandemic camera gear prices have been increasing including the price for this lens and I wanted to know why. I did some research and the reason the price of this lens is increasing it because over the years sony's AF systems have improved and lenses like this will provide you a big bang for your buck.
