This is a quick look at a Nikko Turbo Panther. This is a vintage RC car form the 1980's. In this video I give an overview of the one that I have and then do a brief demo followed by a race against another member of the Nikko 1980's line-up, the famed, SEARS LOBO... known to so many kids that circled SEARS catalog wish books for Christmas gifts in the 1980's. So I put them up against each other for a head to head race. I am not an expert on vintage RC just a fan, so I describe things the way I see it, I do not claim to be an authority on this or any RC car, and any opinions expressed are my own. As most of you know, two of the most beloved and popular radio-controlled models of all times was released in 1986, at the peak of the 1980s buggy craze. That year "my world" was basically divided in two: The ones who had a Nikko Turbo Panther and the ones who had a Taiyo Jet Hopper/Tyco Turbo Hopper. Well, and then the ones who had started before 1986 and maybe already was the proud owner of a Grasshopper, a Hornet or another Tamiya hobby-grade model. Personally, I got my second RC model in 1986. My first buggy! This was indeed the Turbo Panther and as far as I remember all my friends in my home town had one. You can watch a short video with the story of that one here: While it is easy to differentiate between a Jet Hopper and a Jet Hopper II, the Turbo Panther was actually also released in 2 different versions. In this video you can see the exact differences and the way to set a Mk1 apart from a Mk2. In my opinion, none of the two models are better than the other. Very alike. Just slightly different. As far as I know, these two versions are the most commonly found Turbo Panthers in both Japan and Europe. The two you see here are boxed versions originally sold in Northern and Mid-Europe. In other countries, like the US, there may exist other versions and rebranded editions. For the benefit of all who watch this video, please comment if you have any additional information of the Turbo Panther! We would love to hear from you all! Please don't let the color variants fool you. I have seen both versions, the Mk1 and the Mk2, in black, white and red. Both boxes from 1987 and 1986 also show a yellow version: but so far I have actually never seen a yellow version. Hope you enjoyed this comparison and maybe even found it useful! See you soon! ---------------------- This was my second RC model back in the 1980s and is still one of my all time favorite RC Buggies and "Hoppers" from the 1980s buggy craze. I got it in 1986 when practically every boy had either a Nikko Turbo Panther or a Taiyo Jet Hopper. Yes, most couldn't afford a "real" Hopper, like the Grasshopper or Hornet from Tamiya. Or most of us simply didn't know they existed! A few years ago I re-discovered all my old, now vintage, RC cars from the 1980s in the basement of my parents. My own Turbo Panther unit from 1986 was sadly in very very poor condition. Simply driven to it's death. So I decided to take it apart and save some of the still usable parts, in case I happened to stumble upon a unit in the future that could prove a better base for a complete restoration. That time is now and I am happy to present my new Nikko Turbo Panther! Not as fast as +30 years ago but 100% original, fully operational and with a body in prestine condition! Just a real pleasure to behold! Look out for more Turbo Panther videos in the future (currently being edited). Not that suprising, age has taken a good bite off it's speed. Many of my Nikko vintage models from my collection are now, 30 years old, running really slow. At the same time a good amount of my Taiyo (Tyco) vintage models still has a fair amount of speed. Coinsidence and bad luck? I'm not sure. I also tried it out off road, but it simply did not have enough power to turn it's wheels on loose dirt and gravel. To be fair, all the Nikko Super Fox/Nikko Mascot units that has survived today are not running as slow as this one. For a good comparison in speed watch VintageRC_Nut's Nikko Mascot 4WD running here: Fast or slow, the classic frame-buggy design of the Nikko Super Fox and the Nikko Turbo Eagle are among some of my favorite Japaneese RC models. Subjectively speaking, only surpassed by the design of the Nikko Turbo Panther and the original Taiyo/Tyco (Jet/Turbo) Hopper Series. What do you think? I am sure these two models has thrilled the hearts of many back in the good old 1980s. Local find 1986 Nikko Thunderbolt. After testing and making this video, I found out that my transmitter battery was low. I since replaced with fresh batteries and the range is much better. The antenna is also short which will be fixed at a later time.

Happy Hobby Days and Keep 'em Running! See you soon! ---------------------- This is the Auto Wheelie Challenger from Taiyo R/C. Released somewhere in the period 1983-1985. Most likely 1983 as the original radio certificate hints to this year. It was a gift from my parents and my first radio-controlled vehicle back in the days of the 1980s. I still keep a lot of fond memories of running it on the livingroom floor and tables. To my great pleasure I recently re-discovered it in my parents basement ... along with all my other Nikko and Taiyo RC Cars from the 1980s. It was only much later that I found out that the Auto Wheelie Challenger clearly had taken it's visual 'inspiration' in the much larger and iconic Tamiya Wild Willy from 1982. While the Wild WIlly was a 1/10th scale assembly kit the Taiyo Auto Wheelie Challenger is a much smaller RTR 'micro-replica'. It has a rear while drive skid steer system which allows for controlling it while wheelin'. Simply brilliant and great fun! A much appreciated smaller and more affordable alternative to a Tamiya Wild Willy. Hope you'll enjoy this trip back to the 1980s with me. In my video series 'ViNTAGE ViSiONS' you can find many more models from the 1980s. Running and working. Replacement (6v total) battery pack → You can try to fit it back into the case or just wrap electrical or duct tape around it. But it may not fit well in your charger if you do that. This pack I rebuilt was a Nikko Ni-Cd 6v. But you can do this with most others. You can also just buy a new pack, but it's fun to crack stuff open and see how things work.
