An 4 min video discussing APC’s user replaceable circuit breaker technology, specifically the Modular PDU solution installed in the ATC. Facilities solutions are always trying to keep up with the speed of IT in the data center. This video will explore the benefits of APC’s Modular PDU cabinets which are greatly decreasing the time to deploy new IT assets in the customers environment. When customers want to either add new racks or change capacities in the racks, they typically require 3rd party electricians and the process can take days to weeks to accomplish. In most cases, new electrical circuits need to be ran to feed either new racks or larger capacity rack PDU’s. The APC Modular PDU cabinet is an innovative approach and simply requires the purchase of breaker modules which can be installed by the customer into the PDU cabinet to add new racks or change rack capacities. Customers simply have to slide the new breaker module into the PDU cabinet and route the included power whip down to the new rack PDU. Capacities range from single phase 120/208 modules to larger 3 Phase modules providing worth of power. This approach allows for new assets to be installed in minutes vs. days or weeks.

We make a general overview on an APC 7920 PDU by looking at the the main functionality of this power distribution unit (PDU). The PDU can be both managed over the web or over a command line interface CLI. For the management either the 10/100 Mbit ethernet or the RJ12 serial port can be used. The power is fed in through a C13 port (maximum 12Amps current) and it is than switched to eight C14 power outlet plugs, which share the power (maximum 10A per C14 output plug, or 12A combined). In the first portion of the video we go over the way how the PDU operates and present some scenarios of how it can be employed in a production environment or in a home lab for automation or for saving power. This APC PDU can be both monitored and managed through SNMP, which offer enhanced functionality for monitoring and scripting, which makes such a unit very versatile. Jump to 12:20 if you are only interested in the teardown. In the teardown we have a look on the general construction, than focus on the power switching elements and inner logic inside the PDU, and also analyze the path of the power through the unit. This PDU has two separate switch mode power supplies providing +24V DC for the relays and a low voltage one as well for the digital electronics. These are based on the TOP244YN integrated circuit. The main CPU is an AT56753-1U, which is a custom part made by Atmel for APC, so there is not much data available on it. The overall build quality is really high, and the components are good quality, which is expected from a manufacturer like APC.

00:33 FIRST STEP (optional, do it only if you got a used unit) ======================================================= 04:13 SECOND STEP: SET UP IP ADDRESS VIA FIRMWARE TRAP ======================================================= Setting an IP address on your PDU in the case if you do have a console cable is really easy. However, I assume that many people who have a new unit or a used one restored to factory defaults do not have such a proprietary serial cable. This is why the IP setup is done via an APC firmware trap using standard RJ45 ethernet, which should be available for all PDU owners. For the firmware trap, you first need to set up a static ARP entry on your computer connected to the network where the PDU is plugged in. First, check the MAC address of your PDU. Mine has the MAC address of 00:C0:B7:CC:70:F9. It should be printed at the bottom of the unit, or in the slip which came with the new PDU. Figure out the IP address of your PC plugged into the same network as the PDU you are trying to set up. Linux command: /sbin/ifconfig eth0 #(substitute eth0 with your ethernet interface) Windows command: ipconfig /all #(look through the output and search for your IP) Next, decide on an unused IP address which you would like to give to the PDU. Ping this IP address to make sure, that it is not being used. In my case I have picked . Both the Linux and Windows command is the same: ping Next, on your PC you set up a static ARP entry. For this you need to become the Administrator user! On a Linux PC: arp -s 00:C0:B7:CC:70:F9 On a Windows PC: arp -s 00-C0-B7-CC-70-F9 The MAC address is not case sensitive, so you can use upper or lower-case. Finally, we set the IP address via pinging it, using a specific packet size of 113Bytes, since the APC firmware trap has been set by the manufacturer to this specific packet type. On a Linux PC: ping -s 113 On a Windows PC: ping -l 113 On a Mac: ping -s 113 10:66 THIRD STEP: WEB MANAGEMENT SETUP, SSL AND HTTPS. ======================================================= Open up a web-browser on the PC connected to your PDU, which now has an IP address set up on it. Paste into the address bar the IP address of your PDU, and open up an unencrypted HTTP session. Next, make sure, that you use some form of encryption. Although SSLv3 is no longer considered secure, it is still better than sending your precious passwords over a network through clear text. In newer web-browsers you will receive the SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP, since the new browsers no longer allow you to override their security and use SSLv3. This is because SSLv3 has the so called Poodle vulnerability. Many old APC PDUs will not support newer encryptions (like TLS) so you will need to force your browser to open up an HTTPS session with your device. On my 7920 PDU there should be a firmware upgrade available, which makes it possible to use newer encryption than SSL. However, the microcontroller chip running inside these old PDUs and UPS devices is really bogged down even by SSL, meaning that with TLS they will likely get even slower and less responsive. On Linux you can use the Konqueror browser, where you can still add security exceptions. When it comes to the DHCP setup, if you use a cheap router as your DHCP server, you need to make sure, that you untick the option regarding the vendor specific cookies. This is because the PDU otherwise will not accept DHCP offers from DHCP servers, which are not sending this specific field in their DHCP advertisement and DHCP offer packets. On more advanced DHCP servers you can set this up without issues, but you need to take care of this yourself, it does not work out-of-the-box. 24:51 FOURTH STEP: SET UP SSH VERSION 2 ======================================================= SSH setup for secure-shell access instead of clear-text Telnet. You should set up SSH version 2 via the web management, and wait a while until the crypto-keys are generated on the PDU. Now you should be able to log in via SSH. I found, that one need to use the -M option to run SSH in master mode due to the old SSH server running on the PDU, and even so I often get "Broken Pipe" errors when I try to log in. The command on a Linux shell to log in via SSH, where apc is the username and is the IP address of the PDU: ssh -2 -l apc ======================================================= You should most probably get rid of the static ARP entry from your PC. To do so, either reboot it, or remove them as the Administrator user. Linux command: arp -d Windows command: netsh interface ip delete arpcache

If you forget the password to your APC Rack PDU (generation 2 - starts with part number AP8xxx). Then you can recover it by connecting to the PDU via the serial port using an APC 940-0144 cable, then pressing the reset button as shown in the video. I generally use TeraTerm to connect serially to the PDU The serial port settings are:- 9600 Baud rate 8 Bits No parity 1 stop bit No flow control

Let's talk about adding electrical accessories to a motorcycle without causing power issues. I will explain in a simple and hopefully easy to understand way, exactly how to determine what can be added to you motorcycle without over drawing from your charging system. Basics to follow along with video if you'd like. ◾ Section 1: Relationship of volts (v), amps (a) and watts (w). V x A = W or W / V = A Motorcycles operate at 12 volts so replace V with 12 like this: 12 x A = W or W / 12 = A Example: My bikes output is 23A at idle so to convert to watts: 12 x 23 = W or 12 x 23 = 276w ◾ The three components of a charging system: 1) Battery - Starts the bike and stores power 2) Alternator - Charges the battery and powers components 3) Regulated/Rectifier - Converts VAC to VDC ◾Find available charging output for accessories by first finding total output and then subtracting the power draws that are constant when the motorcycle is running. This is your cushion. ◾ Now you know what you can add without charging issues. If you want to add more try these: 1) Convert light bulbs to LED to save wattage 2) Add a circuit to turn off your LO beams when you turn on your HI beams, if your motorcycle doesn't already have this 3) Change your fuel filter as this can double the load of the fuel pump if its dirty ◾ Ah or amp hour rating of a battery: How long a battery will last when being drawn from at a specific rate. This is important to know if you are knowingly overloading the charging system so you don't go too far with it. ◾ The risk of plugging directly to your battery: 1) It becomes messy if you are adding multiple wires. В ГОСТ "Электроустановки зданий" (п. п. 3.1, 3.2) даны следующие определения: Электрооборудование - любое оборудование, предназначенное для производства, преобразования, передачи, распределения или потребления электрической энергии, например: машины, трансформаторы, аппараты, измерительные приборы, устройства защиты, кабельная продукция, электроприемники. Электроустановка - любое сочетание взаимосвязанного электрооборудования в пределах данного пространства или помещения. Таким образом, в соответствии с указанными выше определениями, персональный компьютер (далее - ПЭВМ) не является электроустановкой, а относится к электрооборудованию. 2. В соответствии с п. Правил технической эксплуатации электроустановок потребителей (далее - Правила), утвержденных приказом Минэнерго России от № 6, зарегистрированным Минюстом России № 4145, Правила распространяются на организации, независимо от форм собственности и организационно-правовых форм, индивидуальных предпринимателей, эксплуатирующих действующие электроустановки (далее - Потребители). Согласно разделу "Термины и определения" Правил эксплуатация - стадия жизненного цикла изделия, на которой реализуется, поддерживается или восстанавливается его качество. При этом эксплуатация изделия включает в себя в общем случае использование по назначению, транспортирование, хранение, техническое обслуживание и ремонт (ГОСТ 25866-83). Таким образом, Потребитель, эксплуатирующий электроустановки зданий, где установлено электрооборудование (ПЭВМ и др.), обязан проводить мероприятия по определению необходимости присвоения неэлектрическому персоналу группы I по электробезопасности. На основании п. Правил перечень должностей и профессий, требующих присвоения персоналу группы I по электробезопасности определяет руководитель Потребителя. 3. Руководитель Потребителя определяет необходимость присвоения группы I по электробезопасности неэлектротехническому персоналу, работающему на ПЭВМ, на основании нормативных документов по устройству и эксплуатации электроустановок (Правил устройства электроустановок и др.), исходя из анализа условий труда персонала с точки зрения опасности поражения электрическим током. В случае отсутствия условий опасности поражения электрическим током на рабочем месте с ПЭВМ руководитель Потребителя может оформить организационно-распорядительным документом свое решение об отсутствии необходимости присвоения I группы по электробезопасности неэлектротехническому персоналу и составления соответствующего перечня должностей и профессий. 4. В соответствии с требованиями п. Правил присвоение группы I по электробезопасности неэлектротехническому персоналу проводится работником из числа электротехнического персонала данной организации, с группой по электробезопасности не ниже III. Присвоение группы I производится путем проведения инструктажа. Допускается проведение инструктажа неэлектротехнического персонала организации с присвоением I группы по электробезопасности работником, имеющим III группу по электробезопасности, принятым на работу по совместительству.
