A fiber optic patch cord is constructed from a core with a high refractive index, surrounded by a coating with a low refractive index, that is strengthened by aramid yarns and surrounded by a protective jacket. Transparency of the core permits transmission of optic signals with little loss over great distances. The coating’s low refractive index reflects light back into the core, minimizing signal loss. The protective aramid yarns and outer jacket minimizes physical damage to the core and coating. Fiber optic patch cables can be divided into different types based on fiber cable mode, cable structure, connector types, connector polishing types and cable sizes. A patch cord is always fitted with connectors at both ends. A pigtail is similar to a patch cord and is the informal name given to a cable fitted with a connector at one end and bare wires (or bare fiber) at the other. Generally speaking, SC APC connector and SC UPC connector are distinct from each other based on fiber end face. SC APC connector is polished with an 8-degree angle, while SC UPC connector is polished with no angle, which causes difference in light reflection SC APC vs SC UPC: What Are the Differences? As mentioned above, we know SC APC and SC UPC varies from polishing style, which is a difference in the manufacturing process. But in the actual usage, what are the distinct features of SC APC and SC UPC connectors and how to choose from them? Here are some clues. ·Return Loss Value With a SC UPC connector installed on the end of a fiber, reflected light is reflected straight back to the light source. However, with a SC APC connector, reflected light is reflected at an angle into the outer cladding layer rather than straight back towards the light source. This different way of reflection of reflected lights brings about different return loss value. SC APC connector is standardized with a return loss value as -60dB or higher, while SC UPC connector as -50dB or higher. ·Insertion Loss Value Another specification to consider about fiber connector is insertion loss. Lower the insertion loss, better the performance. Someone prefer SC UPC connector, because they hold the view that SC UPC connector is easier to realize low insertion. This is true on account of less air gaps in SC UPC connector than SC APC connector. However, modern technique has made insertion loss value of SC APC connector as low as SC UPC connector. ·Applications SC APC connector is commonly used in applications that are much more sensitive to return loss, and requires for high precision signal, such as FTTX (Fiber To The X), video delivery through RF signal, WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) applications and analogue equipment like CCTV. This video explains LC connector in details regarding its design, size, performance, connector types, and more! LC connector spec sheet download: In this video, we will show you the basics of LC connector which has been very popular in today's fiber optic networks. The LC Connector uses a mm diameter ferrule. Ferrule is the white cylindrical part here. The ferrule is made of a type of ceramic called zirconia. The LC has very good performance and is highly favored for single mode fiber applications. The left side picture shows a duplex LC connector. The right side picture shows a duplex LC to SC patch cable. This picture shows the size difference between ST, SC, and LC connectors. ST connector has a cylindrical body and a bayonet locking. SC connector has a rectangular body and has a push-pull locking. Both ST and SC connector use diameter ferrule which is the white cylindrical part shown here and here. LC connector is only half the size of a ST or SC connector. It uses a diameter ferrule, the tiny white cylindrical shown here. In the same space, you can double your fiber connections with LC connector since it occupies only half the size of a SC or ST connector. There are several types of LC connectors for different applications. The top row shows simplex LC connectors. The bottom row shows duplex LC connectors. The connector housing's color represents the connector's type and application. Beige color is multimode connector, blue color is single mode connector, and green color is single mode APC connector. Both regular multimode and single mode connector have a flat face, but the APC connector has a 8 degree angle. APC stands for Angled Physical Contact. APC connector is only for single mode applications. This drawing shows the typical dimension of a simplex LC connector. The overall dimension is about 30mm by by . This gives you a rough idea of its real size. You can download a LC connector specification sheet at the URL listed above. LC connector needs bulkhead adapters for mating to each other. The left picture shows simplex and duplex bulkhead adapters. The right picture shows a quad LC adapter which is 4 adapters in one. The color coding here tells us again that beige color is for multimode fibers and blue color is for single mode fibers.
