Today we are working on building a refurbished 14th generation Dell PowerEdge R640 for a client. This server came with two 240GB SATA drives and four SAS drives. Luckily, we got a great deal and the system was just built a few months ago in April of 2020, so we are hoping these drives have plenty of life left in them. Of course, we want to squeeze as much storage space out of them as possible, so we decided to install a Dell BOSS-S1 card. This inexpensive addition will allow us to install our operating system on two M.2 drives in a RAID-1 configuration. The card supports three types of drives, and we chose the Intel 240GB option. Now, when comparing the total cost of the BOSS card and M.2 drives as opposed to purchasing more 2.5" disks, we see a huge savings. Whereas each 2.5" drive could cost $400 or more, this solution cost us around $400 in total. Even better, we are really happy that all 10 drive bays are now available for storage drives that can be configured or reconfigured as needed in the future without touching our base ESXi installation. The video is not great quality due to the camera refusing to autofocus during the recording, however it is our hope that it may help someone struggling with their installation. Для чего нужны несколько массивов на одном устройстве, и как восстановить данные с RAID массива на базе контроллера HP P822. Из подключенных к контроллеру дисков можно создавать один два или более RAID массивов, уровни этих массивов могут быть какими угодно, количество массивов и их возможные уровни будут ограничиваться только количеством накопителей. Единственный недостаток такого построения — это то что при выходе из строя контроллера вы потеряете всю информацию с обоих RAID. Для примера мы создадим RAID0 под систему, что должно увеличить скорость чтения и записи информации и RAID пятого уровня для хранения бэкапов, архивов и другой важной информации. Как известно пятый RAID сам по себе довольно надежный тип дискового массива, но он не славится своею производительностью. Объединив несколько групп массивов с чередованием, вы получите RAID 50, что значительно повышает производительность и высокую эффективность использования дискового пространства такого RAID в сравнении с пятым уровнем. По производительности это приблизит его к десятому типу, но надежность такого RAID массива при этом будет меньшей. Данный тип RAID допускает отказ не более одного диска в каждом подмассиве. HBA disk I/O cards vs. RAID disk I/O cards for your Home storage needs and save money. The goal here to find out if a HBA base disk controller is better then a RAID disk I/O controller for Your IP based NAS needs while saving money. My money is on RAID controllers for you can get some really nice cards that can do all types of RAID setup plus they can also do HBA mode or a mix of both. HBA Cards are really just RAID 0 style config at the basic level and can work well but that is about it. Lastly I go with RAID for it is really cheap but very flexible. Nothing against HBA cards (outside of the pricing.) but speed vs. number of disks in not the only thing you want. Low overhead, better caching modes and so many other options. Hope this helps! Later!
