Hi, my name is Youliedy Vega, Product Marketing Specialist here at VoIP Supply and today we are going to be unboxing Grandstream’s latest wireless VoIP Solution which includes the DP720 and the DP750 base station. So lets get to it! Alright, so lets begin unboxing the DP750 which is the DECT station that comes with the solution, and these two items, the DP750 and the DP720, are only sold individually, they are not sold as a pair unfortunately, but you do need the 750 to make the DP720 work. Alright, so, lets see what’s in here. This is the base, and the power cord, the Ethernet connection, lets put that down. You also have the Manuel here, the start guide, for your convenience. So now lets take a look at the DP720 and see what’s in here. Quick start guide as well. Here’s the handset, Power supply. So this is the cover, and the batteries for the phone. Put them in here, put the lid on it, lets put this on here for you to carry if you need to. There you go, just clicks right to it. So that’s the handset, and then we have the station where the phone sits. Lets take this out of here, oops; wrong way, there you go. So that is the DP750 and the DP720 and that’s what they include. So we just got done unboxing the DP750 and the DP720. The DP750 base station supports up to five of the wireless handsets, it also supports 10 SIP accounts, and it is POE capable. It has a range of up to three hundred meters outdoors, and fifty meters indoors. Now, the DP720 wireless handset here, supports up to 10 SIP accounts, it comes with a speakerphone, it has the speakerphone capability, also has a jack if you want to wear a headset with it and it is full HD voice and audio. Now, this powerful solution is very beneficial for any retail environment or anyone in a warehouse I think, because it is mobile, you can carry it around with you, and it also has this built in clip that you can carry around with you. We have a page devoted to the Grandstream DP720 IP DECT Phone here. Since it is still impossible to get machines to review without buying them we went and bought the Grandstream DP 720. It duly arrived in a branded box with some instructions. Then we realised that we had to buy the base separately and so we ordered the base (called the DP 750) which duly arrived. It was then a matter of unboxing and configuring the units. This is always more difficult with a DECT phone because not only do you need to configure the setup for VoIP you also have to pair the base station and handset. Things are not instant with pairing and you do have to be patient and persistent. The DP750 base is a great looking unit with blue status lights on the top. It sits squarely and Grandstream seem to have really cracked the style and function of the unit. We carried out a distance test on the video. The distance claimed is 50 metres within a building. We struggled with this as you can see in the video above. However, in a day to day environment we don't think range will be a problem. The system supports up to 5 handsets per base station and 10 accounts per base station. The handset comes with a charging station which is flimsy but doesn't seem prone to tilting or falling over. It's adequate rather than class leading. The handset has a great positive action unlike previous Grandstream attempts and is far better than the DP715 - the previous model. It is pleasantly curved and has a good - if not premium - feel to it. One nice touch is that it comes with a belt clip. We have had problems with other Grandstream models where the sensitivity of the microphone fell off really rapidly making the handset almost unusable. We are please to report no such problems here. The microphone and speaker seem to capture and playback very well. Because this is a 2 unit solution the screen on the handset is tiny. It is a 1.8 inch colour screen and displays the functions as best it can in such a package. It is always a problem with these devices that you cannot look at the screen and talk at the same time. Using a software package such as our Easydial+ where functions can be performed on your computer screen can help. However, transferring calls using the handset in common with all DECT handsets is a matter of typing in codes. The units are priced above the competition by about £40 when the the base and handset are added together. It is a premium that we would find hard to justify. Conclusion This is a good DECT solution which we would be happy to supply. Grandstream seem to have caught the competition up but they are not yet leading it. Charging a premium is probably not a sustainable strategy. If we can help further please contact us- we are real friendly people you can talk to. We have a whole page dedicated to the comparison here We were interested in comparing the new Grandstream DP720 and the Gigaset A540H DECT handsets. We started by buying them both. We cannot buy them from one wholesaler but have to go to different suppliers. They have contrasting sales strategies which matches the brands. The Gigaset supplier will configure, ship and support the unit whereas the Grandstream supplier will simply ship. Usually, this reflects in the price with the Gigaset equipment being more expensive but here surprisingly the Grandstream Equipment was more expensive, to us and it will be to the end customer. Both of the handsets should be bought with base stations which will support multiple handsets. The base station is the unit that you plug into the ethernet. The Grandstream base is called the DP750 base. It is a great looking unit with blue status lights on the top. It sits squarely and Grandstream seem to have really cracked the style and function of the unit. On the other hand the base station of the Gigaset is the N300P. It is a vertically configured unit which feels light and topples over at the drop of a hat. It supports six handsets compared to the Grandstream’s five. The handsets comes with charging stations which are light and just about adequate. Neither are going to do your desk any cosmetic favours. In use both of the handsets have good keyboards, microphones and speakers. The Grandstream handset is pleasantly curved and has a good - if not premium - feel to it. One nice touch is that it comes with a belt clip. The Gigaset is marginally larger and is more linear. Both handsets are functional and neither is going to win any design awards. You wouldn’t want to hold very extended calls on either. The stand by battery life on the DP720 is quoted as 250 hours and on the A540H it is quoted as 130 hours. Talk time is quoted as 20hours vs 13 hours. Both will see you through the working day adequately and be ready recharged for the next day – if you remember to drop the phone back on the charger. Both units claim a 50 metre indoor range and a 300 metre outdoor range. In our tests the Gigaset won hands down achieving the stated distances whereas the Grandstream came nowhere near. In the real world though, where the phone gives you the ability to move from desk to desk rather than building to building it probably isn’t an issue. On both systems the screen on the handset is tiny. They both display the functions as best it can in such a small package. It is always a problem with these devices that you cannot look at the screen and talk at the same time. Using a software package such as our Easydial+ where functions can be performed on your computer screen can help. However, transferring calls using the handset in common with all DECT handsets is a matter of typing in codes. Conclusion Grandstream have at last come up with a good solution. The Gigaset solution is well known and widely used. It does have issues in use, especially the delays between key press and dial, but then the Grandstream will also have issues. For the time being we are sticking with “the devil we know”- the Gigaset – not least because it is significantly cheaper.
