So for example you can get them to backup your data to the cloud and scan the hard drives for errors and viruses - allowing your computer to focus on your work at hand. TS-453Be The cheapest NAS presented here is the TS-453Be which is great as a first NAS and unlike units from other manufacturers it contains a PCIe upgrade slot to allow you to install a SSD/10GBe expansion card when you need extra speed. TS-453Be: TVS-x72XT The current kings of NAS at the moment is the TVS-x72XT range containing the fastest connections built in and a powerful 8th gen Intel processor to handle the fastest performance - yes performance is improved with a better processor. TVS-872XT: TVS-x72N A budget range of the TVS-x72XT which excludes 10GBe and Thunderbolt 3, however depending on the deal you can find - over in Australia I've found them listed at some retailers A$1,000 cheaper than the XT range, so for a value deal you can grab one and use one of the PCIe slots to upgrade to 10GBe yourself and you're set. TVS-872N: WHAT IS RAID RAID0 - Uses all drives to create one large storage space. RAID5 - Uses one of the drives for protection in case of drive failure - so you don't use all your data. RAID6 - Uses two of the drives for protection - better safety, slightly slower speeds. THUNDERBOLT 3 These NAS drives are easy to get up and running, however the hard drives in NAS systems are noisy and the current longest cables you can get are only 2 meters in length, so while it's great for temporary usage, I recommend using a 10GBe ethernet cable with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter instead - that way you get up to 100 meters in length. Cable: Adapter: 10GBe The current standard in performance speed, while you'll only get these speeds with 4 or more hard drives operating at RAID0, with a fast enough processor, it's a good idea to aim for these cables as they go up to 100 meters in length and as you grow out your system your speeds will improve. Cable: 10GBe to TB3 Adapter: thunderbolt+3+adapter WHY NOT A DAS? They hog your computers resources, only allow one connection at a time, and the cable length is limited so they can be a very noisy solution. WHICH HARD DRIVES? I've been using Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives for the past few years, they have large capacities at fast operating speeds. Seagate IronWolf Review: WIFI All NAS systems I've used require a direct connection to a router or a WIFI dongle to connect to the internet. Connecting to the internet is a security risk, however if used cautiously with good security practices, it is great for accessing a NAS from both over the Wifi or over the Internet when required. For a good while I have been thinking about a storage solution. This far I have kept all of my videos and so on on a simple WD Blue Drive on my daily PC. Now as it is nearly full I decided to finally build a NAS as Clouds like Dropbox or Onedrive are actually quite expensive if you really need a lot of space. I went with QNAP TS-653D-8G and 4x4TB of Toshiba N300 4TB drives. To be honest I would have wanted 4x8TB but it is still quite expensive. How to Upgrade the RAM in your QNAP TS-x53D NAS to 16GB or 32GB Back in early 2020 when the QNAP TS-x53D NAS was first announced, many users were surprised at the maximum memory limit that the manufacturers stated on the specifications. With the Intel J4000 series chip that QNAP TS-x53D NAS arrives with, it did seem odd that the maximum or 8GB of DDR4 2400 memory for this chip was listed firmly in the specification. On the face of it, 8GB seems like plenty. That will comfortably support the NAS tasks of a plex media server, all those productive first-party NAS applications and backups. However, as file sizes grow, as NAS surveillance gets popular, as virtual machine and container station applications grow in popularity, it will not be too long before you will see that memory use ALWAYS above 80% in the task manager. Sadly, we have asked the manufacturers and they continue to stand by the fact that you cannot exceed this limit, officially- understandable, as stability of your system is ESSENTIAL. However, I am pleased to tell you that I have been experimenting with several different sizes of RAM sticks and various brands, and am pleased to confirm that not only can you use non-official own-brand memory in the QNAP TS-x53D NAS (so that is the QNAP TS-253D, TS-453D and TS-653D), but also that you can install two 16GB sticks of DDR4 RAM (one per slot) meaning you can have a QNAP TS-x53D NAS with 32GB of Memory! Read below for my guide, it will detail how to install the RAM, how to check that it is installed correctly and how to test that it is working straight away. Upgrading your QNAP TS-x53D NAS to 16/32GB of Memory - Pay Attention Before we continue with the guide, it is worth highlighting that the QNAP TS-x53D NAS manufacturer strongly recommends that you do not exceed the stated memory limit on their specifications page. Hi Guys, it is finally time for a new NAS (Network Attached Storage) and I am excited to share this with you. After I bricked my first NAS by accident (it was a 16 years old Buffalo that a friend gave me for free), I had bought the WD MyCloud that gave me quite some trouble as I have shown in previous videos. Honestly, the whole NAS thing started to annoy me so I considered to just jam a bunch of hard drives into the empty slots of my Windows PC and call it a day. However, this would not really solve my storage problem as I would have to keep it running all day, or turn it on every time I want to access some bigger files. So I would have to schedule its running times and make it able to wake up on lan access, then buy a smaller case and silent cooling fans because it is way too loud - you see where this is going, I reinvented the wheel ;) So a new NAS it is - but which one? After a lot of research over the past year I managed to define my requirements and narrow it down to about 10 different NAS models. Between lectures, exams and my job I kept an eye on the prices while putting some money aside for it. In the meantime, every single hard drive I had was filling up (recording online lectures and new video material) and when I started to buy extra flash drives to offload some data, I knew I needed to make a move. Luckily, I came across a very good offer for the QNAP TS-453D and a friend of mine could confirm its quality, because he just happens to have this exact model.
