Here is my first build video! The Horten Ho 229, a really fascinating aircraft.
The Horten , RLM designation Ho 229 (or Gotha Go 229 for extensive re-design work done by Gotha to prepare the aircraft for mass production) was a German prototype fighter/bomber initially designed by Reimar and Walter Horten to be built by Gothaer Waggonfabrik late in World War II. It was the first flying wing to be powered by jet engines.
The design was a response to Hermann Göring's call for light bomber designs capable of meeting the "3×1000" requirement; namely to carry 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb) of bombs a distance of 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) with a speed of 1,000 kilometres per hour (620 mph). Only jets could provide the speed, but these were extremely fuel-hungry, so considerable effort had to be made to meet the range requirement. Based on a flying wing, the Ho 229 lacked all extraneous control surfaces to lower drag. It was the only design to come even close to the 3×1000 requirements and received Göring's approval. Its ceiling was 15,000 metres (49,000 ft).

После поступления в люфтваффе братья продолжили конструкторскую деятельность и в течении 1936-37 годов были
построены три "Хортена-II", получившие обозначение "Хортен-III", конструкция которого стала исходной для последующих
разработок братьев. В 1939 году братья получили большую известность, отчасти, благодаря которой министерство
авиации выделило им ремонтный завод в Геттингене и фабрику "Пешке". К моменту передачи завода братья спроектировали
и построили планер Но-IV, который отличался большим (в 2 раза) размахом крыла.
Следующей моделью стал Ho-V, отличительной чертой которого была двухместная кабина и два 80 л/с двигателя НМ-60R
с таким же расположением двигателей, как и на других моделях - в задней части крыла.
Понимая перспективность самолета прекрасной аэродинамики летающего крыла и турбореактивных двигателей братья
принялись разрабатывать следующие прототипы уже с учетом новых требований. В это же время в США велись схожие
исследования, что положительно сказалось на финансировании братьев со стороны Министерства авиации.
К лету 1943 года был построен Ho-VII, который предназначался для аэродинамических исследований и в качестве
самолета связи.
Следующим шагом было создание реактивной версии уже знакомой конструкции. Весной 1944 прошли первые испытания
безмоторного прототипа Ho-IX-V1. После успешных испытаний конструкторы принялись за работу над вторым самолетом.
Изначально на него планировалось устанавливать двигатель BMW-003, но из-за их неготовности было принято решение
установить Jumo-004, для чего немного переделали конструкцию крепления двигателей и некоторые другие изменения
конструкции. На стадии создания второго опытного образца подключился концерн "Готаер вагонфабрик", получившая
задание довести конструкцию Ho-IXX-V2 до серийного производства, в следствии чего конструкция летающего крыла
вновь претерпела небольшие изменения, самым важным из которых было добавление в кокпит катапультируемого сиденья,
и Министерством авиации было присвоено обозначение , модификации A-0. На A-0 планировалось
устанавливать два Jumo-003B (модификации 1,2,3), четыре автопушки или в центроплане,
предусматривались подвесы под центропланом на две 1000кг бомбы или два 1250 л. бака с топливом.
Слово "революционный" недостаточно точно отражает суть Ho 229,
- Работа Хортенов в области создания "летающего крыла" была самой передовой в мире".

Model letounu Horten Ho 229 od firmy Zoukei Mura v měřítku 1/32 jsem stavěl již před několika lety. Jelikož je to díky svému rozpětí křídel již docela velký model, rozhodl jsem jej prezentovat rozebraný v hangáru. Patina byla opravdu pouze decentní, s tím, že se jedná o stroj ve výrobě. Vlastní model Ho 229 od firmy Zoukei Mura je velmi propracovaný a při stavbě jsem nepoužil žádné komerční doplňky k vylepšení detailů. Ve videu se pokusím ukázat, jak pracovat s obtisky imitace překližky od firmy HGW models a napodobit tak vzhled dřevěného povrchu na modelu. Diorama by nebyla diorámou, bez figur a samozřejmě bez vlastního hangáru. Ve videu je tedy i několik obrázků ze stavby části konstrukce hangáru. The aircraft has always intrigued aviation fans. But after a 2009 National Geographic Channel special aired, touting the Horten Ho 229 V3 flying wing’s “stealthy” characteristics and claiming it was stored in “a secret government warehouse,” Internet forums went wild.
The “secret” warehouse was simply the National Air and Space Museum’s storage facility in Suitland, Maryland. The U.S. Army Air Forces had captured the flying wing prototype—along with hundreds of other German aircraft—near the end of World War II. In April 1945, George Patton’s Third Army found four steel-and-wood Horten prototypes; of three airframes, the V3 was nearest to completion, and was shipped to the United States. It made its way to the Smithsonian around 1952.
At the time, the Institution had a lot of airplanes but little display space. So the Horten remained in storage for almost 61 years, some of that time outdoors. In 2013, Museum staff began evaluating the Horten’s center section to see if it could be safely moved to the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center for conservation.
The aircraft features a steel-tube framework enclosed by a plywood skin, which had been damaged during storage: “The plywood was badly delaminating in some areas,” says Lauren Horelick, an objects conservator at the Museum.
While the initial objective was to stabilize the aircraft so that it could make the 40-mile trek from the Museum’s warehouse to its Virginia restoration facility, conservation staff gathered a wealth of information.
The center section’s structural wooden supports, the team discovered, are made from Scots pine—not a wood widely used for aircraft. It may have been chosen because of wartime shortages, but, says aeronautics curator Russell Lee, “we have to remember that this particular airframe was highly experimental. It was in no way designed to be a production airplane. If they had got it into production, they may well have used something very different.”
Conservators found two kinds of paint on the aircraft: The first is a blue-gray paint that was added by the U.S. Army Air Forces when the aircraft was displayed right after capture. But its original green paint appears on the interior and parts of the exterior plywood panels. The team considers the green paint unusual and has determined that its chemical composition is similar to that of fireproof paint developed in Germany during the war.
“We did a lot of analysis of the paint,” says Horelick, “and it was fascinating to see how advanced the Germans were, considering the limitations of plywood, and coming up with ways to enhance [that material’s] performance.”
So was it stealthy? The designer, Reimar Horten, claimed in 1983 that the flying wing was meant to include a kind of stealth capability that would make it difficult to detect with radar. In his 2011 book about the aircraft, Only the Wing, Lee recounts: “Reimar wrote that he planned to sandwich a mixture of sawdust, charcoal, and glue between the layers of wood that formed large areas of the exterior surface of the H IX jet wing to shield…the whole airplane from radar, because the charcoal should absorb the electrical waves.”
As the conservation team prepared the center section for its move, they examined the plywood skin for evidence of radar-absorbing compounds. If charcoal had been added to the flying wing in an effort to deflect radar, they would have expected to see a layer of it, something the team didn’t find.
The team did discover that two different adhesives were used to assemble the plywood panels, but only one of the adhesives—urea formaldehyde—can accept any sort of fillers or additives. Samples taken from the aircraft and analyzed under a digital microscope showed small black particles. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggest the particles are bits of oxidized wood.
“We were finding that as we brushed our adhesive across our plywood repair material, we found small bits of this wood at the bottom of the adhesive jar,” says Horelick. “Based on this, I have a really strong suspicion that the little particles that we see in the Horten’s adhesive layer could be from the plywood manufacturing process.”
In 2008, engineers from Northrop Grumman, builder of the B-2 Spirit flying wing bomber, spent a day at the Museum looking at the Horten and making a number of radar measurements. “They published a scientific paper,” says Lee, “and the bottom line is that they couldn’t say the aircraft was any stealthier than a regular sheet of plywood.” Це відео автоматично взято із YouTube за назвою товару, можливий неправильний пошук.

Horten Ho 229 (Gotha Go 229)
The Horten Ho IX (often called Ho 229, or Gotha Go 229 due to the identity of the chosen manufacturer of the aircraft) was a late-World War II prototype flying wing fighter/bomber, designed by Reimar and Walter Horten and built by Gothaer Waggonfabrik. It is the first pure flying wing powered by a turbojet, and has been described by some as the first aircraft designed to incorporate stealth technology. It was a personal favorite of German Luftwaffe chief Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, and was the only aircraft to come close to meeting his "1000, 1000, 1000" performance requirements. Its speed was estimated at 1,024 km/h (636 mph) and its ceiling 15,000 meters (49,213 ft).
In the early 1930s, the Horten brothers had become interested in the flying wing design as a method of improving the performance of gliders. The German government was funding glider clubs at the time because production of military aircraft was forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles after World War I. The flying wing layout removes any "unneeded" surfaces and, in theory at least, leads to the lowest possible drag. A wing-only configuration allows for a similarly performing glider with wings that are shorter and thus sturdier, and without the added drag of the fuselage. The result was the Horten .
In 1943, Reichsmarschall Göring issued a request for design proposals to produce a bomber that was capable of carrying a 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) load over 1,000 km (620 mi) at 1,000 km/h (620 mph); the so called 3 X 1000 project. Conventional German bombers could reach Allied command centers in Great Britain, but were suffering devastating losses from Allied fighters. At the time there was simply no way to meet these goals — the new Junkers Jumo 004B turbojets could give the required speed, but had excessive fuel consumption.
The Hortens felt that the low-drag flying wing design could meet all of the goals: By reducing the drag, cruise power could be lowered to the point where the range requirement could be met. They put forward their private project, the Ho IX, as the basis for the bomber. The Government Air Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium) approved the Horten proposal, but ordered the addition of two 30 mm cannon, as they felt the aircraft would also be useful as a fighter due to its estimated top speed being significantly higher than that of any Allied aircraft.
The Ho 229 was of mixed construction, with the center pod made from welded steel tubing and wing spars built from wood. The wings were made from two thin, carbon-impregnated plywood panels glued together with a charcoal and sawdust mixture. The wing had a single main spar, penetrated by the jet engine inlets, and a secondary spar used for attaching the elevons. It was designed with a 7g load factor and a safety rating; therefore, the aircraft had a ultimate load rating. The wing's chord/thickness ratio ranged from 15% at the root to 8% at the wingtips. Control was achieved with elevons and spoilers. The control system included both long span (inboard) and short span (outboard) spoilers, with the smaller outboard spoilers activated first. This system gave a smoother and more graceful control of roll than would a single spoiler system. The aircraft utilized retractable tricycle landing gear, with the nosewheel coming from an He 177's main gear. A brake parachute slowed the aircraft upon landing. The pilot sat on a primitive ejection seat.

In the waning hours of world war two, the allies faced a new terror in the skies. It had twin engines, twin machine guns, and flew like nothing they had ever seen before.
It was capable of flying faster than traditional planes, impossible to detect on radar, and it would prove to be the winning hand for the defense of the nazi state.
But this alternative history never happened.
The Ho 229 was a radical departure from modern aircraft design, and had it been rolled out, could have change the the outcome of the war, the way we design planes today and even led to something far more sinister…
This is the original flying wing, the Horten 229.
As BBC Future noted in 2016, the ‘flying wing’ design is not a common sight in the skies because it’s an incredibly hard concept to make work.
Remember, the main tail of any aircraft keeps it stable and prevents it from swerving or yawing from side to side.
Therefore, a lack of tail makes the aircraft a lot harder to control.
Even more of a challenge is what happens to an aircraft without a tail when its engine stops; that is, can it still fly during a stall?
The ability to do that is an inherent capability that any aircraft has to be able to do.
So why would you try to build an aircraft inherently difficult to fly?
Because a flying wing has several benefits. For one thing, it’s difficult to spot on radar, since it has no tail fins that are what usually bounce back radar waves back to earth.
For another, a flying wing is sleek and smooth in shape, which means it has minimal drag.
That should make it a lot lighter and more fuel-efficient than most fighter jets.
Lastly, it should theoretically fly faster than a conventional plane using the same engine.
The famous Northrop B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, first released in 1989, is a modern example of a flying wing aircraft.
Before that Northrop was working on a propeller bomber design, called the XB-35, and later upgraded to the YB-49 with jet engines.
But believe it or not, they were not the first.
Go back more than four decades from when the B-2 stealth bomber was launched and you have a far earlier plan for a flying wing - and a fairly stunning one at that.
It was the Ho 229 and it was set to revolutionize the air force of a certain country fighting a certain major war at the time.
The Horten Ho 299 was a sleek number, measuring 7.4 metres or 24 feet 3 inches in length at its centre-line, with a total wingspan of 16.8 metres or 55 feet 1 inch.
The Horten wing concept addressed the whole engine stall dilemma that afflicts flying wing aircraft by ensuring that the aircraft would keep stable at all times.
Bowers says that the Horten wing not only cancelled out the yawing issues that an aircraft without a wing can suffer, but that it also dramatically reduced drag.
The Horten Ho’s cockpit height was a decidedly low 1.1 metres or just 3 feet 7 inches, although it overall height was metres or 9 feet 3 inches.
Unsurprisingly, this cramped space meant that it only allowed for one crew member - and even that would be damn tight for said pilot.
Its range was a highly impressive 1,900 kilometres or 1,200 miles, noteworthy too because it was far in excess of the 1,000 kilometre range demanded by Herman Göring.
It also had a flying ceiling of 15,000 metres or 49,000 feet, which was useful in terms of stealth.
That allowed for performance outputs of a maximum speed of 960 kilometres or 600 miles per hour or Mach at sea level, whilst having an acceleration speed of up to 977 kilometres or 600 miles per hour or Mach92 at an altitude of 12,000 metres or 39,000 cruise speed was 900 kilometres or 560 miles per hour.
And why weren’t those speeds particularly impressive? Because the attentive among my listeners will have realized that none of those speeds matched or exceeded the 1,000 kilometres per hour demanded by Herr Göring.
Even so, it was said to possess a ‘never exceed speed’ of just 1,000 kilometres or 620 miles per hour. Perhaps Göring was suitably impressed by a take-off speed of 150 kilometres or 93 miles per hour and a rate of climb of 22 metres per second or 4,300 feet per minute.
In terms of armaments, the Ho 229 was hardly packing, being only able to carry two 30 mm or inch MK 108 cannons.
Nevertheless, the Nazis believed that an entire squadron of them would have sufficed in what would have been their main role, which was to hunt and shoot down the fleets of Allied bombers that were attacking Germany’s industrial plants, main infrastructure and largest cities.

It was April of 1945, and Germany was in flames. The bombing raids had decimated the cities, towns, and factories where the Wehrmacht mustered its last war assets, and the Americans had almost seized Western Germany.
It was then that US soldiers from General Patton's Third Army were conducting mop-up operations across the Rhine when a unit of infantrymen stumbled upon a battered airfield facility.
Upon entering to secure it, the soldiers were baffled by what they saw. The place was filled with aircraft unlike anything they had ever seen, and they looked almost otherworldly.
A German engineer then told them that the flying wing aircraft that lacked a tail and resembled a stingray were jet-powered prototypes.
The Americans immediately knew they had to seize them and destroy any evidence before the Soviets realized Germany had developed a one-of-a-kind aircraft with top-tier technology.
Only they could uncover the secrets of the unique German aircraft design dubbed the Ho 229…

A divebomber which saw success in the early days of World War Two, but as the war progressed it became apparent that it was becoming increasingly obsolete. Efforts were made to make it suitable for a variety of roles, including the addition of 37mm cannons for use in an anti-tank role.

This is the assembly of my Airbus A330-300 Thai Airways. This model is not perfect. I was unlucky at a few areas... thats the reason, why I’m happier as usual, that I finished that model. I hope the model is still ok for you😁
