Check out a series of pictures I've taken on this Pentax 43mm Limited lens since purchasing it a few months ago. I was a little skeptical at first - it seemed awfully close to my FA 50mm 1.4 lens, and something like three times the cost used - but I snagged a good deal and went for it and it has won me over. It is an excellent lens, one of the few I will never sell while I also own a Pentax K-1. My Pentax K10D 10 megapixel DSLR camera with a Pentax FA Limited 43mm f1.9 lens. A beautiful pairing, if you can get used to the focal length. I love the look of the older CCD sensor paired with this early-nineties designed lens. You'll notice a few higher-ISO shots mixed in there. Trust me, you'll see them ;) That high iso look of these earlier CCD sensors has a distinct look. I think at 400-800 it actually can look pretty cool, maybe mostly because it just reminds me of a different era. That's all subjective anyway :) The Pentax K10D is just so much camera for the price, and if you're eyeing any of the many film era Pentax glass than it's a beautiful kit for vintage lenses. I bet the Nikon D80's/Canon 40d's are similarly good for that reason. Still wanting to get my hands on some to test out. I show a couple shots of the lens with a lens hood on, but I don't think it's necessary really. The Pentax 77mm f/1.8 FA Limited is a lens that every Pentax user should consider. This lens is one of the marquis lenses in the Pentax portfolio and the image quality on these holds up well. As of this video’s recording, this lens was introduced twenty-four years ago with a slight update in 2021 to introduce new coatings. Other than the coatings update, the 2021 and later version of this lens is the same as the version used in this video. Not a lot of camera gear reaches the two-decade mark for production. Even less reaches that mark and then keeps being made with a relatively incremental update. That simple statement ought to tell you all you need to know about the 77mm FA Limited: This lens is so good that no reason exists to provide an improvement. Sometimes people just get things right – a baseball connects well and lands outside the park, a rocket takes off from and then lands again on a ship in the ocean, or a marbled wagyu ribeye comes off the cast iron with a beautiful crust and a warm, pink middle. Sometimes we people do things well. The 77mm FA Limited is that home run, that landed rocket ship, and that wagyu ribeye served just hot enough to melt foie gras. Pentax has released, now, four full-frame Limited lenses. That’s four amazing reasons to be in the Pentax ecosystem. But, if I’m honest, the 77mm alone is really the only reason that you need. In the near future, AI will design perfect camera lenses. Designs for any spec, aperture range, and image format with perfect MTF charts will drop out of computer systems every day, or even more often. New designs will drop far more quickly than they can be made and marketed. And they will be perfect, uniform, sterile, and absolutely boring. Imperfection is, after all, the playground of beauty because no more-sterile, more-boring look exists than perfection. And those perfect future lenses will arrive, sell or not, and disappear faster than 90s rappers could drop new lyrics. Photographic lenses will become transient, temporary, and unexciting. And then, someday, someone will stumble across an old lens for sale, one with a bit of coma mixed with astigmatism in the corners, very slight chromatic aberration in the center, and an image character defined by and made better because of those minor flaws. That photographer will fall immediately in love with the look that lens provides and, if that lens they pick up is the 31mm FA Limited, then yes, that love will be well deserved. The 31mm is as close to perfect as, I think, lenses designed by people should go. This lens delivers incredible sharpness stopped down a bit and stunning subject isolation opened up. Across the aperture range, the 31mm creates captivating image rendering that, in the hands of a photographer who can use that image character, will deliver images that keep viewers’ eyes on the scenes. Slight imperfection keeps our attention – the way that asymmetrical freckles across a nose blend into the shapes of high cheeks and flirt with the undersides of eyes – for instance, provides an imperfect avenue for our attention. Photographs do the same thing when a slight swirl in the out-of-focus background directs our view around a scene and eventually toward a sharp, isolated subject that tells a story about a moment. Camera lenses should never be perfect because humans – photographers and viewers – are ourselves imperfect. We will always relate to the imperfect beauty in a near-but-not-quite-perfect image. And for creating those, the Pentax 31mm f/1.8 Limited is one of the perfect lenses. Ricoh has a great webpage on the design of this lens, and it’s worth checking out if for no other reason than to learn about the six people who developed this lens. When the team set out to make this lens, they had three objectives: creating natural image renditions, making the lens enjoyable to use, and making this lens exciting to own and use. Look, they checked all those boxes well and if I ranked every lens I own in terms of their sale order if I needed money in a pinch, I can only think of three lenses I would sell after this one – my Nikkor 18cm f/2.5, Zeiss 55mm f/4 Flektogon, and Zeiss 180mm f/2.8 Sonnar – because finding that trio in Bronica S2 mount ever again would be impossible. So of the gear that I own that could be replaced, if I ever needed to sell it, this would be the last of those lenses to go. So to the team behind this lens, if you hear this, I hope that conveys that, for me, this lens achieved all the stated goals. The trend in photography has been to create crystal-clear images with no aberrations or unwanted artifacts. This has meant that some of the characteristics of legendary lenses such as those in the Takumar series have been lost. In May 2023, the smc PENTAX-FA 50mmF1.4 Classic Lens was announced alongside the HD PENTAX-FA 50mm F1.4. Here Lee Iveson takes a look at the 50mm Classic in more detail, exploring the rainbow flair effect from wide-open apertures as well as reducing this effect with a higher f-stop. On one hand it felt premium with the materials and overall finish, but the focus ring and how the lens felt largely separated into two pieces didn't feel right. Still a very cool and unique lens! It looks like the now have a HD version, but not sure what all has changed. They also still sell the original.
