Plunge into the ocean’s depths to take a closer look at the sea lion’s hunting skills, and to learn more about how climate change is affecting its habitat.
--
Sunning themselves on rocks or waddling awkwardly across the beach, it’s easy to think of sea lions more as sea house cats. But don’t be fooled by their beachside behavior. Under the waves, sea lions are incredible endurance hunters, reaching speeds of 18 miles an hour and hunting for up to 30 hours at a time. Claire Simeone dives into what makes these majestic mammals such resourceful foragers.

New Zealand sea lions are unique to New Zealand and one of the rarest species of sea lions in the world. It is thought that before humans arrived in New Zealand sea lions were found right around the coast. Sea lions were hunted for food and skins but have been protected by law since the late 1800s. Their population of around 12,000 is now restricted to southern New Zealand and sub-Antarctic waters. Most breed on the Auckland Islands but a large number breed on Campbell Island and some have recently recolonised Stewart Island. The Auckland Islands have a marine reserve extending 12NM to help protect these breeding colonies as well as other marine life here. In places the foraging grounds of sea lions overlap with fishing grounds. To manage interactions, we use Sea Lion Exclusion Devices, which allow sea lions to escape fishing nets alive and unharmed. These have proven successful and fishing is no longer a threat to local sea lion populations. Це відео автоматично взято із YouTube за назвою товару, можливий неправильний пошук.

This male California sea lion, named Cinco, was rescued after being cruelly shot in the face with a shotgun. The injury left him blind and unable to survive in the wild. Cinco was rescued, rehabilitated, and deemed non-releasable by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The good news is that Cinco the Sea Lion has gone on to live a very comfortable and happy life under human care where he serves as an important ambassador for his species and a cautionary tale for why we absolutely must leave wild animals alone.
Recently, beachgoers were caught on video running for their lives as two charging sea lions chased them off the beach at La Jolla Cove in San Diego, California in viral TikTok video. It is my opinion, as a marine biologist who has worked with California sea lions like Cinco, that these sea lions did not chase La Jolla Cove beachgoers without provocation. It’s more likely that these beachgoers harassed the sea lions and provoked this viral La Jolla sea lion chase. Harassment of seals and sea lions happens far more often than it should. Not just in La Jolla, but all over the world. As Cinco the Sea Lion can sadly attest.

Sea Lion ! Who will win if they go head to head! These wild animals are both strong predators, but who is stronger if they go head to head? How do they attack? What is their lifespan? Are they endangered? Will the Tiger or Hyena come out on top?!
SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos:
Which of these animals would “win” if they go head to head and which one has the best changes to survive in general. These rounds will let you find out!
Where do these creatures live?
Sea lions are found everywhere. They make up both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. They are, however, notably not present in the Atlantic Ocean. You will find them in the subarctic and tropical waters of the global ocean. You will find Sea lions along with southern Australia, South-Western Africa and South America.
The Sea Lion population is steadily growing at an estimated 257,000 individuals. While the world has lived through times where there were more than 2 million sea lions' seven subspecies, there has been a decline in their numbers. This is due to the multi-decadal sea surface warming crisis.
In 2008, Walrus was initially discussed as an endangered species. By 2011, they had been listed under the Endangered Species Act. However, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determined in 2021 that it does not warrant listing as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Both animals face depletion, but the Sealion sees more natural and manufactured decline than the Walrus.
There has been an amendment to the Marine Mammal Protection Act to enable indiscriminate killings of Sea lions to preserve Salmon. This new directive means that Salmon-eating sea lions could be killed to the tune of 1100 each year.
What do these creatures eat?
Sea lions are predators who feed on about 50 species of fish. They primarily feed on herrings, squid, octopuses, and anchovy. They are also predators of Salmon and other bottom-dwelling fishes who come out to escape winter. Walrus eat bivalves like clams. They also eat worms, sea cucumbers, gastropods, and cephalopods. They are carnivores who eat soft-bodied animals. They prey on such soft body fishes as polar cod. They also eat the carcass of young seals. In comparison, some males go after ringed and bearded seals for food.
How much do these creatures need to eat?
The Food intake of Sealion is about 5% to 8% of their body weight per day. It has been observed that they do not drink water except for males when they are fasting. Fasting happens for males who have to defend their territories during the breeding season. If they go and find food, they miss mating opportunities within their territories.
Sea lions are usually fast for weeks, and while they are drinking only water, they tend to consume stones. There is no justification for it scientifically. Yet, it is believed to help with digestion, make them weigh more, or stop irritation from intestinal parasites.
Sea lions have an average of 20 – 30 years. The life expediency puts the years at 15 to 25 for the majority of Sea lions. When they are in captivity, they tend to go past 32 years. It is also recorded that there is a pub mortality rate between 10% to 15% during the first month.
Sea lions can attack humans for many reasons. The usual is because they view them as a threat or mistook them for play toys. If a sea lion comes 8 feet into contact with a human, it could be unsafe. The usual attacks are bites and pulling by the outfit into water. The mouth of a Sealion can give you an infection or minor bone injury.
Natural predators of Sea lions are sharks and orcas, killer whales, and humans. These attackers often hunt the weak and young Sea lions. Walrus, however, are very large and rarely find themselves being attacked by other animals. They often fight amongst themselves instead. Occasionally polar bears and killer whales attack weaker and younger Walruses, but they are unsuccessful. Humans who try to hunt Walruses physically are also under the mercy of their strength.
Who wins this round?
Sea lions are fast underwater, although they like to cruise slower. They can reach 30km per hour. Their fastest time is 56km per hour when they choose.
On land, a Walrus moves awkwardly, much like the Sealion, yet has the speed of a running human being. They can move on all fours and sprint in short spurts if they have to.
Sea lions can regulate their own body temperature. Their capillaries are close to the skin's surface and can catch its sunbeams to keep the body warm when it is cold. They also have a hearing ability that picks up sound both under and above water. Their whiskers can also detect fish hidden. They are the best choice for aquariums. They are quick learners and can adjust to new information quickly. They breed readily, receive training and perform efficiently in captivity. Description :
This southern sea lion is used to the taste of the fish and enjoys eating them. Penguins, however, have encountered more dangerous predators than him. This may impede his effort to capture one, so he plots a strategy. He waits for the colony of penguins to head to the shore, and in the shallows, he manages to isolate a puppy, and drive him away of his comrades.

The animals here are so respected and loved - everyone is asked to keep a 6-foot distance from them and absolutely no touching or feeding them. I took this video while sitting on our balcony. This is the incredible moment a curious sea lion leaps for joy inches away from its new kayaker friend’s face, after following him for most of the day.
The adorable pup stalked and splashed the group of kayakers for several miles, off the shore of Stewart Island, New Zealand, during an annual row around the coast.
Less than a mile from land, Barry Hosking and Ed Parker found themselves surrounded by the hyperactive pinniped, who couldn’t stop leaping joyfully around their yellow vessels in a splashing spectacular.
Lurking behind Ed’s kayak and spinning around in circles, suddenly the nosy mammal rides a wave towards Barry, launching itself high over the front of his one-man boat in a remarkable fashion, while even managing to smile for the camera.
Stunned by the encounter, Barry said: “This is undoubtedly an experience I’ll recall for the rest of my life.

Sea lion wanders onto San Diego freeway, miles from ocean
A sea lion that may have lost its bearings or been struck by wanderlust roamed onto state Route 94 in the Stockton area Friday, stopping traffic while concerned motorists, California Highway Patrol officers and SeaWorld personnel rescued the wayward aquatic animal.
The errant sea mammal appeared on the eastbound side of the freeway near SR-15 -- about three miles from San Diego Bay and some eight miles away from the ocean -- shortly after 9:30 a.m., CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

GO FEED A SEA LION!? 🤩 #shorts #challenge #seaworldorlando
Bull sea lions are huge and very territorial. They spend most of their day looking after their colony of female sea lions, which can be a full time job. They ward off rival males, keep an eye out for predators, and even keep humans from getting too close to their women or their turf. They have a loud bark that sounds like a dog with a cough and they use this bark to protest almost anything unusual, or to simply warn everyone else of their presence and their dominance. This bull in Loberia, on the coast of San Cristobal Island, in the Galapagos, is the undisputed king of the beach and he keeps busy guarding his kingdom. He had just run full speed up the hill to chase off another bull, who wisely also ran full speed over the sand dune and as far as he could to get away. Sea lions are not agile though, and the effort of the 200 yard dash nearly exhausted him. He needed to get back to the water and he decided that rolling down the hill was his best choice. As the bull made his way back to the water, a couple had been taking photographs of each other in various poses on the beach. Our enthusiastic bikini model was working very hard to find the right pose in the shallow tide pool with a beautiful ocean backdrop. She crouched and sat on a rock in the narrow canal that leads from the beach to the deeper water. The sea lion made its way toward her and barked. It's impossible to know if the bark was appreciation or annoyance, but the bikini model decided that she did not want to find out. She popped to her feet and made her way squealing, to the safety of the beach. The sea lion continued to the deeper water and the barking continued, but if you listen closely, you can definitely hear that it's more like a laugh than it was before. Apparently sea lions have a sense of humor!

Sea Lions Explained! From their famous whiskers & being fast swimmers. Here are 10 amazing facts to learn more about these eared seals.
SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos:
#10. Some of them actually look like lions
You might look at a sea lion and wonder where the name comes from. After all, the comparison between sea lions and terrestrial lions is less obvious than the one between seahorses and terrestrial horses. Sea lions belong to a group known as pinnipeds, which are commonly called seals. Pinnipeds are defined as a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic, mostly marine mammals. Examples include Sea Lions, Walruses, and Elephant Seals.
#9. Sea Lions are mammals
This is another fact about Sea Lions which their name hints at. After all, terrestrial lions are mammals too. Sea Lions, and all other pinnipeds, are warm-blooded vertebrates that have fur, give birth to live young, and breastfeed them. As aquatic mammals, they still need to breathe, and as such, they have developed special adaptations for that.
#8. Sea Lions are classified as "eared seals"
As mentioned earlier sea lions are pinnipeds. Pinniped actually means flipper feet or feather feet. There are many different animals that are included in this group. However, these animals can be separated into two different groups, true seals and eared seals. There are seven species of sea lions and nine species of fur seals that make up the eared seals.
# 7. Sea lions are really noisy
The comparison between sea lions and terrestrial lions doesn't just have to do with appearances. Sea lions are just as noisy as their terrestrial counterparts. Although sea lions do not make a wide range of sounds, they almost never shut up. And since they like to move together in groups, the combined loud noises can be quite a cacophony. They even make noises while they sleep.
#6. Sea Lion whiskers are very sensitive
All animals have dedicated structures and appendages for enhanced sensitivity. For sea lions, those structures are their whiskers. Their hands and feet are dedicated to swimming. And so, their whiskers, in conjunction with their nose and mouths, help them find and feel their way around things.
# 5. They exhibit significant sexual dimorphism
We've discussed sexual dimorphism on this channel before. As a quick refresher, it is a phenomenon in which there are marked differences between male and female members of the same species. It usually occurs due to different anatomical, physiological and behavioral needs and instincts between males and females. And sea lions are some of the creatures in which this characteristic is very visible.
#4. Sea Lions stay away from the North Atlantic Ocean
Sea lions are widely distributed all across the world. From Mexico to Australia. However, they tend to stay away from the North Atlantic Ocean. There's no clear scientific reason for this either. After all, the North Atlantic Ocean is at its preferable living temperature. And there's lots of food they can choose from.
#3. Sea Lions have impressive cognitive functions
Sea lions are very intelligent and display much of the characteristics we associate with humans. For example, they are some of the only animals capable of bobbing their heads along with a piece of music. They are also very quick to learn new behaviors, which is why they are so common to see in zoos and aquarium displays. They have even been demonstrated as being able to understand a kind of sign language.
#2. Sea Lions are really good swimmers
Sea lions are excellent swimmers. Some are born as natural swimmers, while other species wait a couple of weeks before they step in the water. Since parenting is a role that both males and females play, most pups learn how to swim from their fathers. They also protect them from predators while they are learning to swim.
#1. Sea Lions have a built-in heating and cooling system
Being warm-blooded, most mammals need to keep their bodies warm. This allows them to continue their metabolic processes without dying. And so, although sea lions can dive deep into the ocean, where it is very cold, they still have a way of keeping their body temperature at normal levels. And when it gets too hot, they also have a way of keeping their temperature cool, as excess heat is also bad for them. This system of body temperature regulation involves their flippers.
When it's cold, blood vessels in the flippers constrict, and when it's warm, blood circulates to help keep the sea lion cool. Seals usually require cool, nutrient-rich waters with temperatures lower than 68 °Fahrenheit. Even those that live in warm or tropical climates live in areas that become cold and nutrient-rich due to current patterns. If you want to catch a glimpse of the sea lion pups at Point La Jolla this summer, you will have to do so from a distance.
That’s because the Point and much of Boomer Beach will be closed to the public May 1st through Oct. 31st due to a unanimous vote by the California Coastal Commission Friday.
“We are totally ecstatic over this,” said Richard Miller, Chapter Director for Sierra Club San Diego. “If you had been in the room, you would have heard a big eruption of clapping and yelling and screaming.”
It’s a big win for environmental groups like Sierra Club and Seal Society who have worked on this with the City of San Diego and its Parks and Recreation Department for four years. Sea lions will now have their own area all to themselves during pupping season.

How To Tell The Difference Between Seals And Sea Lions
While seals and sea lions are both part of the pinniped family, there are differences between the two!
Seals have stubby front feet compared to the large front flippers of a sea lion. As a result seals rely more on shuffling and gliding on land, whereas a sea lion can support its weight on its front flippers to walk.
Sea lions have outer ears. Seals lack external ears altogether. You have to take a close look to see the tiny holes on the sides of a seal. Це відео автоматично взято із YouTube за назвою товару, можливий неправильний пошук.
The Sea Lion Caves near Florence are one of the best wildlife-watching opportunities in Oregon. Steller sea lions gather in the cave in the winter months, making it a great COVID-safe outdoor winter activity. The cave is full of the sound of crashing waves and the otherworldly calls of the sea lions. The cave itself is beautiful in its own right, and is America’s largest sea cave.
This video shares 4 essential things to know when planning your visit, including when to go, what to bring, how to not miss the sea lions playing in the ocean outside the cave, and the other must-see places to visit on your trip to this part of the central Oregon coast.
