Demonstration of scope ring alignment check and lapping. Some information on how to mount the scope. Video showing how to mount a scope on a picatinny rail: A Ruger M77 MkII is used in the video. Even with the integral Ruger scope base you still need to check alignment even if you don't lap the rings. The Ruger M77 receiver has an integral scope base machined directly into the receiver. The included scope rings mate up, but not perfectly. There is a little play with the rings and the alignment check usually shows that the rings can be adjusted. Even with the alignment check the rings are typically not perfect. This is where scope lapping comes into play. Lapping the scope rings is a little effort and somewhat messy, but not all that difficult. Lap the rings so that about 80% of the ring material is freshly polished. Only the bottom rings need to be lapped. What you get is a pair of rings that are perfectly aligned. You also get piece of mind that your scope is properly bedded and not under stress from miss-aligned rings. This should help maintain the zero on the scope and improve group size. Of course, if the rings are removed and replaced, they will require re-alignment and need to be lapped again. I also go over how I mount a scope. I do not use any guides when adjusting the eye relief or rotation of the cross hairs. After mounting a few scope I do it all by feel. I adjust the eye relief by setting the scope on low power and moving the scope forward or backward in scope rings. Once this course adjustment is made I turn up the scope to the highest power and fine tune the eye relief. After the eye relief is set, then I adjust the tilt of the scope so that that cross hairs are aligned to my liking. On hunting rifles I do this from an off-hand position. On a bench gun I do this from a sitting position. Once I am happy (usually after checking several times over a few minutes) I tighten everything down.

Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains why proper ring height is important and how to determine the height you need using a variety of scopes and scope rings. When determining how high of a ring you need to order, there are a couple of factors that need to be taken into account. First is the objective bell diameter of your rifle scope. It is vital that the objective bell and the barrel do not contact once the scope is mounted. Second is the bolt handle's ability to clear the eyepiece. While many suggest that you choose the lowest rings available that meet this criteria, it is also important to remember that when shouldering the rifle you should have the scope naturally come into position. If you have to "cheat" your face placement on the stock, then the scope is either too low or too high. Choose the ring height that allows you to naturally sight through the scope.
