This is a useful method to quickly find out the scope mount height you need for your scope. Taking two quick measurements, you can work out the minimum mounting height required for your scope. We measure the Objective Lens Outer Diameter and also the Mid Tube Diameter, then use these measurements to determine the distance between the bottom of the mid tube to the bottom of the objective lens. The example on the video and the working out is as follows: On a Zeiss 3-12x56 Scope Half of the Objective Lens Diameter of 62mm = 31mm minus Half of the Mid Tube Diameter of 30mm = 15mm Equals 16mm Mounting Height Required We use this method every day to work out what height mounts customers require. Another Example would be: Swarovski DS 5-25x52 Half of Objective Lens Diametre of 65mm = minus Half of the Mid Tube Diameter of 40mm = 20mm Equals Mounting Height Required We also look into a method to achieve a lower mounting height by looking at the drop between the action and the barrel. This varies from rifle to rifle, so we would usually ask you to measure this. Whereas it is usually around 4 or 5mm, we cannot be totally sure of this. Bearing this in mind, if your barrel drop measures 5mm and you have a Zeiss 3-12x56 with a 16mm Mounting Height, you can lower this 16mm by 5mm, resulting in a 11mm Mounting Height Required. This would be the very minimum height you would need, so it's normally a good idea to add a couple of mm to this minimum height to guarantee that you avoid any contact with the barrel. A safe height here would be 12 or 13mm of mounting height. You can then look at various mounts, with the knowledge that your minimum mounting height needs to be at least 12 or 13mm to be safe. ADDITION TO THE VIDEO: Although you may achieve a low scope mounting setup using the correct hardware. An extra thing to check is the bolt clearance on your scope. Steve Ostrem and Caleb Savant, our two roving Brownells Gun Techs who aren't afraid to topple a few Sacred Cows, tackle a question that faces long-range rifle shooters: Should you lap scope rings? The answer is the classic "It depends." In some cases, you can get an excellent fit between the rings and scope without lapping. Other times, you'll have to lap if you want a precise, consistent fit between the scope and rings. Lapping involves removing material from inside the rings so they align perfectly with the scope tube. Correctly lapped rings will make full contact all the way around the tube without exerting uneven pressure on it, which can compromise accuracy. Machined one-piece scope mounts, or well-made two-piece mounts sitting on an in-spec receiver rail, often won't need lapping. If you're saving pennies with an extruded mount, or if you're mounting a pair of rings onto a slightly sketchy base, you may need to lap those rings. So.... NOT A MYTH: Lapping scope rings may be necessary to ensure proper mounting of a scope. How do you figure out if it's necessary? Steve has a tip on how to determine when you need to lap those rings.

There’s all kinds of different rings/mounts/specs/ideas/theories out there that can make actually getting the right information on how to properly tighten the rings around your scope tube difficult. While it’s nearly impossible for us to go through every single ring/mount ever created, Jimmy and Mark give a breakdown on the most common ring/mount types we see and not only how to set them up properly, but also why it’s so important that you do. We also talk about scope position in the rings, why the use of thread locker is unnecessary for your ring screws, and a bunch more…    *Please note* - When Jimmy discussed the torque sequence for vertically split rings, the “Top first, then bottom” is the specific sequence we recommend for our older “Pro” or “Viper” series of rings, which are unique in and of themselves being that they’re not like other vertically split rings like those from Warne, American Defense, LaRue, etc. For some of those rings/mounts, we will actually recommend doing the bottoms first, to around 25 inch pounds, and then the tops to our recommended 15-18 inch pounds. Demonstration of scope ring alignment check and lapping. Some information on how to mount the scope. Video showing how to mount a scope on a picatinny rail: A Ruger M77 MkII is used in the video. Even with the integral Ruger scope base you still need to check alignment even if you don't lap the rings. The Ruger M77 receiver has an integral scope base machined directly into the receiver. The included scope rings mate up, but not perfectly. There is a little play with the rings and the alignment check usually shows that the rings can be adjusted. Even with the alignment check the rings are typically not perfect. This is where scope lapping comes into play. Lapping the scope rings is a little effort and somewhat messy, but not all that difficult. Lap the rings so that about 80% of the ring material is freshly polished. Only the bottom rings need to be lapped. What you get is a pair of rings that are perfectly aligned. You also get piece of mind that your scope is properly bedded and not under stress from miss-aligned rings. This should help maintain the zero on the scope and improve group size. Of course, if the rings are removed and replaced, they will require re-alignment and need to be lapped again. I also go over how I mount a scope. I do not use any guides when adjusting the eye relief or rotation of the cross hairs. After mounting a few scope I do it all by feel. I adjust the eye relief by setting the scope on low power and moving the scope forward or backward in scope rings. Once this course adjustment is made I turn up the scope to the highest power and fine tune the eye relief. After the eye relief is set, then I adjust the tilt of the scope so that that cross hairs are aligned to my liking. On hunting rifles I do this from an off-hand position. On a bench gun I do this from a sitting position. Once I am happy (usually after checking several times over a few minutes) I tighten everything down.

This GunTec video provides the necessary information for choosing scope rings of the proper height. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains why proper ring height is important and how to determine the height you need using a variety of scopes and scope rings. When determining how high of a ring you need to order, there are a couple of factors that need to be taken into account. First is the objective bell diameter of your rifle scope. It is vital that the objective bell and the barrel do not contact once the scope is mounted. Second is the bolt handle's ability to clear the eyepiece. While many suggest that you choose the lowest rings available that meet this criteria, it is also important to remember that when shouldering the rifle you should have the scope naturally come into position. If you have to "cheat" your face placement on the stock, then the scope is either too low or too high. Choose the ring height that allows you to naturally sight through the scope.
