Everyone’s seen halo bikes with jaw dropping price tags – brands one-upping each other with increasingly extravagant builds and exotic materials. And tantalizing as these dream bikes are, often it’s a game of diminishing returns, especially when it comes to performance. Thankfully, there are also select brands focused on the opposite end of the market. Their sole purpose: to provide the highest-performance bikes at the most competitive prices. In many ways it’s here that design is truly cutting-edge, the constraints of tighter budgets making every component choice that much more critical to ride quality. So this month we’re taking a closer look at three suspension bikes that don’t cost the earth, but still promise the world: The Calibre Bossnut, Vitus Mythique 27 VR and VooDoo Canzo. Prices range from £1,000 for the VooDoo to £1, for the Vitus, the Calibre occupying the middle ground at £1,100. Selling direct keeps costs chains; whether that’s through high street multiples, in the case of retail-specific brands like Calibre and VooDoo, or by shipping direct to your door, as Vitus does. But it is no coincidence that there aren’t any proper full-suspension mountain bikes under £1k. It’s not by chance either, that most entry-level full-suspension bikes come with wheels. Not only are they lighter and stronger; because the fork can be shorter for a given amount of travel, they are also stiffer, so handling can be improved without having to fit a more expensive fork. It’s primarily why we chose the version the Vitus Mythique, even though there’s also a 29in option for the exact same money. So we have three evenly matched suspension bikes that won’t break the bank. But which one delivers the best bang for your buck? Can a new rider buying a first-time mountain bike really meet their performance aspirations at an entry-level, beginner price tag? Vital MTBers, welcome to our $2,000 full suspension mountain bike comparison test. #mtb #mountainbike #biking At Vital, we have the privilege of spending time aboard some really nice, and expensive, mountain bikes. We’ve ridden the UNNO Ever downhill bike which costs almost $11,000, and we’ve tested wheelsets that cost as much or more than the bikes featured here. We felt it was time to take a step back and see how capable a $2,000 mountain bike really is. We found six full-suspension 29ers in the 120mm to 140mm rear travel range. They’re considered trail bikes if you’re unaware of how mountain bikes are classified these days. A trail bike is made to do a little bit of everything, and hopefully do it pretty well. It has more travel than a cross-country bike and less travel than what’s called an enduro bike. Every bike we tested was a size medium and coincidentally, not by our choice, they all featured SRAM 12-speed 1x Eagle drivetrains. That means there is a single chainring up front at the cranks and no front derailleur, keeping the bike simple, efficient and quiet. There were component similarities between some of the bikes, like three of them running a RockShox Recon fork, but each bike was definitely its own machine, each with unique riding characteristics. Enjoy our findings as we put these inexpensive mountain bikes to the test. Mountain bikes have a whole lot of parts, and sometimes it's not so straightforward finding the ones that fit. People message me all the time asking what parts fit their bike, and so I'd like to think they did a lot of Googling and struck out. What do you even Google search? Is there a better way? Today, we'll cover the basics! Yes, this video is way oversimplified and at times, flat out dismissive of details. I know Sram and Shimano 12 speed MTB chains aren’t “perfectly” compatible. Some bikes have freewheels and don’t take cassettes. There was a time where no bike took a thru axle. You could in theory buy a 12 speed HG cassette which would be incompatible with Microspline, which I omitted. Yes, rims have widths too. Older bikes have rim brakes. Valve caps aren’t universal—especially since some riders are going back to shrader. In our original footage I went on forever about wheels and Boost, but we edited it down to a minute because it felt overwhelming and counterproductive. In the end I didn’t feel these caveats would be important to someone who doesn’t have enough experience to Google something. This will hopefully be a simple and welcoming way to get them started out.
