Ian Reviews the Seastix Hook-Up: The stunning Seastix Hook Up Fish surfboard could be the board you've been looking for if you're focused on progressing your surfing, maximising your wave count, or simply just want to have fun. The Hook Up features low entry rocker to help wave catching and paddle speed and has a gentle single to double concave to give the board drive. The wide point is right where you need it to maximise paddling and give a big sweet spot for stability on your pop up. The pulled in swallow tail gives the board easier release into turns and keeps the board moving rail to rail. The Seastix Fish would make the perfect first 'proper' board after mastering the basics on a foamy or a moulded board in the surf school as long as you size it right. This classic shape has been fine tuned over the years by shapers who surf, so better surfers will have a blast on smaller days. The full nose allows the board to plane and catch waves early and the soft rails up front and sharp at the back are forgiving but with enough bite to hold in the bottom turn and in steeper waves. The Seastix brand is a UK brand designing boards for UK surfers who surf in the get the drift here, these guys surf the same waves you do and so produce boards that will work in our waves. The Hook Up deals with choppy windy conditions just fine, like all boards it will perform better in better conditions but its good to know it'll deal with our average conditions. If you're wanting to get into the surfing side to the sport, an inflatable SUP is a great opinion. For some it's because of the spacesaving advantage, and for others it's having a board that's much softer to use and handle in the surf when getting started. For 2020 Aqua Marina have added their first ever surfing iSUP to their new range, that could suit many of these paddlers. This relatively low cost and light weight board will be getting many paddlers into the surf over the next year.

Après avoir fait le test cet été des combinaisons 3/2 mm avec Mathis Crozon place maintenant aux 4/3 mm et 5/4 mm pour se réchauffer cet hiver. Si la combinaison est une alliée incontournable pour nos mises à l'eau, lors du changement de saison et de température, il faut penser à l'adapter. Et parce que c'est toujours un casse-tête de devoir en choisir une bonne pour l'hiver, nous avons décidé de vous mâcher le travail en les testant pour vous. Oui, nous avons un beau métier ! Pour cette édition 2022/2023, nous sommes partis en Irlande dans des conditions hivernales à savoir une eau à moins de 14°C et une météo fraiche. C'est la surfeuse basque Ana Morau accompagnée de Romain Laulhé, surfeur pro vivant à Anglet, fondateur et coach de surf à Power Surf Center, qui se sont chargés de remplir cette mission. Ils ont essayé en tout et pour tout 13 combinaisons de 11 marques différentes (8 combis hommes et 5 combis femmes). Ce test a pour but d'être le plus authentique pour vous aiguiller au mieux dans votre choix suivant vos attentes. Pour cela, nous nous sommes reposés sur cinq critères : la chaleur, la solidité, le stretch, le confort et la conception écologique de matières recyclées. Sans oublier le mot de la fin, l'avis des surfeurs pro concernant les avantages et les inconvénients ! Après avoir testé chaque combi, Ana et Romain leur ont attribué une note sur 5. Nouveauté cette année, nous avons ajouté un critère : le taux d’absorption de la combi une fois cette dernière mouillée ! Parce qu'il n'est jamais très agréable de porter 3 kilos sur le dos, nous avons pesé après la session chacune d'entre elles afin de savoir lesquelles avaient pris le plus de poids une fois mouillées. After spending around 10 days in Thulusdhoo in the North Atolls of the Maldives, I've put together tips from my experience there and from speaking to people who have spent longer in the area. Thulusdhoo is clearly not the only place that you can surf in the Maldives. In fact, I had not idea that the Maldives span over 800km north to south and over 90,000 square kilometres. As such, this is by no means an exhaustive list of tips. Though whilst the South atolls may be more exposed to Indian Ocean swells, it's hard to beat the convenience of Thulusdhoo as it's only 30 minutes from the capital and international airport in Male. Spoiler alert: I loved it. Coke's Named after the Coca Cola factory on the island, this is a right hand reef point break that offers space for turns and barrels for those who are patient (especially in the end section). Most people paddle out from the small island in front of the break but I dinged a board and stood on a sea urchin so ended up paddling from the main beach and around the reef. It's the most famous wave in the area and for good reason! If you want to get barrelled, Coke's is your best bet. Strong currents can appear from nowhere, but are manageable most of the time. Chickens Across the channel from Coke's is essentially its opposite. A left hander with a softer take off, this waves was way more fun than I thought it would be. Supposedly when everything lines up, Chickens offers incredibly long barrels. In addition, it's where I heard of the most people seeing Manta Rays in the surf. Pay $5-$10 USD for a return trip via boat across the channel. Sultans A 20 minute boat ride from Thulusdhoo ($10 - 5 people minimum) and the other side of Himmafushi. Supposedly never closes out, though I was lucky with a big swell so there were definitely close outs. Easy take off and long mellow walls for cut backs, with a sometimes punchy and barreling end section. Jailbreaks Right next to Sultans, Jailbreaks offers similar long mellow walls and lots of space for turns. A pulse from the swell hit when we were surfing there and it exceeded double over head surprisingly quickly! Overall, I thought that the Maldives was going to beautiful white sand beaches and clear water, but average surf. Oh how I was wrong. Admittedly I did arrive in time for the biggest swell of the year (season runs March to October, I was there in September). Regardless though, it is an amazing place to surf. The surroundings are incredible, as you would expect from the Maldives. The surprise was in the quality of the waves! A few other tips: - Ding repair on Thulusdhoo isn't great so if you can hold off to get boards fixed elsewhere, that's probably advisable. - The sun is the strongest I've ever experienced, take LOTS of suncream/rash vest. - Go snorkelling.
