Meet your new #digiscoping best friend - the Kowa TSN-Twist Up Locking Rings As smartphones have become more sophisticated, the demand for larger displays and specification has increased. This has made many of the latest smartphone models not only physically larger in size but also heavier. These devices now offer DSLR quality results and control with incredible images and video available at a digiscopers fingertips. For the best smartphone digiscoping results, it is often essential that the eyepiece eye relief cap is engaged to create a sweet spot between camera lens and eyepiece. Without engaging eye relief, digiscoping results can be dramatically reduced with increased vignetting covering the image. Applying eye relief removes this negative effect and the amount of eye relief depends very much on the individual lens of the smartphone. The major problem encountered by smartphone users when engaging eye relief on the eyepiece is that the weight of the smartphone and adapter puts increased pressure on the eye-relief cap resulting in the eye-relief cap slipping back to it’s default position. To combat this problem, digiscopers have to shoot in portrait mode (vertical) meaning landscape images and video is not possible. Shooting video in vertical mode is particularly restrictive and makes playback on TVs and other devices disappointing. The TWIST-UP LOCKING RINGS provide the perfect solution by locking the eyecup in the desired position for perfect eye-relief. This means that even large smartphone models can easily take photos or videos in landscape format without the adapter being hand held in position to prevent slipping. The SMARTOSCOPE UR-4 is a high quality, adjustable eyepiece adapter ring which securely attaches to the optics rail of SMARTOSCOPE VARIO-ADAPTER via a 30mm thread. It is the gateway between the smartphone adapter and the eyepiece and allows connection to most spotting scope eyepieces from small to large. Four adjustment screws engage the inner compression ring which is used to secure the adapter ring on to your eyepiece without damaging or marking the eyepiece cap. The ring includes adjustment rubber strips to reduce the inner diameter of the adapter ring for extra versatility and compatibility to most eyepieces of any brand.

The Kowa TSN-DA20 is designed to work with our current TE-Z9B 20-60x zoom eyepiece, TE-14WD 30x wide zoom eyepiece as well as the Kowa-TSN 550 series spotting scopes. Set-up is easy. Simply unscrew the eyepiece eye-relief cap on the eyepiece and screw on the DA20 inner collar in its place. As standard the DA20 includes a 43mm filter thread adapter – which can be screwed directly on to a camera lens with a 43mm filter thread. If your lens has a different size filter, simply add one of our adapter rings (sold separately) AR28/30/30.5/37/43/46/52/55/58/62/72mm between your lens and the DA20. Finally push the connected DA20 and camera body combination over the collar and secure. Alternatively you can connect the TSN-DA20 directly to your camera body without a lens – simply purchase the Kowa TSN-AR42 GT adapter ring with standard 42mm T2 mount fitting and add a T2 ring to match your camera system between camera body and adapter. You can easily switch from landscape to portrait position and quickly slide off for normal observation. All camera functions remain including camera lens auto-focus and focus peaking. The full zoom range of the eyepiece is available creating incredible telephoto possibilities for such a compact system. Performance and ease of use of this system is exceptional. Using a wide aperture fast lens delivers blisteringly fast shutter speeds with low ISO settings, combined with a Kowa spotting scope – image quality is excellent. CAUTION: The Kowa TSN-DA20 System works with all camera sensor body sizes but larger systems may exert too much stress on your lens filter thread. I have a Samsung Note 8 and looked at different ones, and found this one which was big enough to hold my Note 8 and sturdy. Other ones online were not big enough to hold the Note 8. It took some getting use to and at first was hard to align with the dual cameras on the Note 8, but once I figured it out it is really great and easy to use. Also the adapter as you can see in the video is case friendly. I use the rugged protective cover with kickstand and it works great with it. The only thing if you look at the video where the padding is, it has wore faster than expected, but that could be on me, because I have over tightened it.  This product is really awesome and if I was to rate it 1-10 it would have to be a 10. After buying a binocular tripod mount for the big 15 power Swarovski's I thought it might be handy to be able to record video through them. What better and simpler way than using a smart phone. As I already use the Phoneskope adapter for my spotting scope I decided to keep it simple and manufactured a friction fit bush to make it universal. Seems to work well. How often it will get used I am not sure but it always pays to have a variety of tools in your recording arsenal. I just thought I would post this up to give some of you tinkerers an idea. I am sure it has been done before but I just thought I would share this little project.

Update from the previous model with a wider section that allows a more secure fit on the eyepiece. The Baader MicroStage II enables camera adaption onto almost any telescope, direct on eyepiece, onto spotting scope and many binoculars. The Microstage II Digiscoping-Adapter by Baader Planetarium is the perfect start into digital photography with compact cameras (with a fixed lens) through the eyepiece of telescopes, spotting scopes or even a pair of binoculars. With these optics, you have to do "afocal projection imaging". The Microstage II is the perfect tool for this. Basically, Microstage II allows you to take a photo through the eyepiece of a telescope, spotting scope or binocular with every compact camera. To get a good image, the camera must be centered and positioned close behind the eyepiece. This is not always easy if you are working freehand. With Microstage II, you can fix the camera in the perfect position behind the eyepiece and wait for the right moment – simpler solutions let you only look through the camera, while the Microstage II allows you to easily swing the camera away to take a look through the eyepiece. When you are ready to shoot, simply swing the camera back – the arm will lock in its old position, and you can take a picture. Vignetting is also a problem of the past with the Baader Microstage II Digiscoping-Adapter, finally, you can combine your digital camera with eyepieces which give you a large exit pupil. This way, you can use the whole camera sensor for images without dark edges – no matter if you are shooting the moon or nature.
